Difference between Oracle Database and Oracle Instance ?????

 Definition:

* A database is a set of files stored on disk.
* An instance is a collection of  Oracle background processes and shared memory.

The database is officially a bunch of files (data files, redo logs, control file, parameter files).
An instance is a set of processes and a chunk of memory running on a server. Most of the time an instance has a database open and session 'live' in the instance to interact with the database. An instance is only connected to a single database.

A database can be opened (or mounted) by more than one instance, however, an instance can open at most one database.

Oracle instance consists of memory structures and background processes.

Oracle database consists of control files, data files, log files etc.
